Designing and drawing a chair that would end up becoming a real chair is something that has been the ultimate dream of Monica Ritterband for years. Designing such a moveable sculpture in space, whose functionality must meet the demands of absolute human comfort and indolence, has been one of her bigger challenges, she says.

At the end of the day Monica’s jumping off point for the chair »Chairytale« was her own artistic world, in that she built up the frame based on inspiration from a large and heavy brick sculpture that she completed in 2007. The shape of the sculpture, which consists of series of arches, has been transformed to become the frame of the chair.

Her goal with the chair was that it should be perceived in the blink of an eye. It should not have many ingenious details that would stop the eye. It should tell a story, its fairytale, in a split second. It should be light and elegant, but still look solid enough for you to feel comfortable about throwing yourself down in it. It should be unique but still be able to merge with a wide range of décors.

»I hope that my story »Chairytale« can live up to my own expectations and that it will insinuate its little tale into the body of all who have the urge to sit in it,« says Monica Ritterband
