Monica ritterband

Monica Ritterband. Born 1955. Self taught


Selected as “Artist of the Year” by Amnesty International with the oil painting “Flames for freedom”, by the city of Viborg with the miniature mosaic “The mature woman”, and by Siemens with the silkscreen print “Love reborn”.

Winner of the sculpture competition for the PowerStation I/S Nordjyllandsværket (today Vattenfall) with the steel relief “Primeval force” in 1999.

Decorated the gables with her note figures in steel for the Municipality of Hvidovre in 2000.

Created the environment award for the Municipality of Hvidovre in 2000 and an honour award for the patient association “The Breast-operated” in 2000 and 2001.

Created a series of large stainless steel sculptures for the Municipality of Furesø in 2001. The five large steel sculptures are placed at the Marina, on the main street in Farum, at Farum Park, and at the plaza in front of the public swimming pool in Farum.

Created three large friezes in stainless steel “Striving for heaven” which decorate the gables of the music school in the Municipality of Hvidovre and also an iron sculpture for the same Municipality in 2001. The iron Sculpture “Dialogue – the divine stairs to heaven” is placed at the central park (Rebæk Lake Park) in Hvidovre.

Created the award sculpture in steel for the Ministry of Integration in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Created a decoration for the Municipality of Randers in the spring of 2003.

Created Musica porcelain series for Royal Copenhagen, coffee set, dinner set, small and large figurines in 2002/2003/2004/2005/2006.

Created the two textile projects “The Humanes” and “Raindrops” for Georg Jensen Damask,which was launched in the spring of 2004.

Created a large image-picture-project for the Municipality of Frederiksberg that expresses the municipality’s values, 2004.

Participated in the art auction on invitation from Royal Copenhagen and the Municipality of Frederiksberg. The painting on royal porcelain “The Seducer” fetched the highest bid. 2004.

Created a 40 metres long steel frieze and decorated two gables for Vejle Technical School 2005.

Created a large carpet collection with more than 100 designs using the theme “Dancers” for Ege Carpets, launched 2005.

Created the glass project “Citylight” for Holmegaard, 2005.

Designed the furniture textile “Cobblestones” for Danish Art Weaving. Launched spring 2006.

Designed several patterns for Alpaca throws for Elvang Interieur. Launched 2005, 2006.

Created the glazed tile relief ”Changing Weather” for Volstrup tile works – covering 58 square metres. 2006.

Was invited to participate in the internationally known “Cow parade art event”. The “art cow” »Sign of Life« was exhibited in the most prominent square of Copenhagen, Kgs. Nytorv (The King’s Square), and later on in The Tivoli gardens.

Created the glass project “Sign” for Holmegaard, launched spring 2007

Created the large brick sculpture”Unity” for the contractor Enemærke & Petersen 2007.

Designed a concept for outdoors consisting of a series of oil lamps »Sunbeam« for Sirius Company, 2007.

Designed – together with designer Tobias Jacobsen, (the grandchild of Arne Jacobsen) – a salt and peppermill and a set of cutlery called, »Tango« for Raadvads 250 years anniversary, 2008.

Participated in a large scale fundraising campaign where several artists were invited to decorate Arne Jacobsen famous “7-chair”. Ritterbands art chair ended up being sold at the auctions highest bid together with the chair by artist Kristian Hornslet, 2008.

Designed a jewellery collection for Flora Danica, 2008.

Created the wood burning stove”7600” for Morsø Jernstøberi plus accessories, 2008.

The launch of the giant art book “The universes of Monica Ritterband”, 2008.

The “7600” series of wood burning stoves were launched in Germany, Belgium, England, Italy, USA, Japan, South Africa and more places in 2008, 2009 and 2010

The “7600” series of wood burning stoves were nominated as the most beautiful design at the Vesta Awards, Reno, USA, March 2009.

Received the international and prestigious design award »Reddot design award 2010« for the “7600” series of wood burning stoves in 2010.

Launched in 2010 the bench concept »NatureHistory« made by historical wood for the company Bondeskovgaard.

In January 2010 Monica Ritterband launched the counter and kitchen concept INBETWEEN. Today the counters are located in small businesses and large training centres such as KolleKolle, Royal Golf on Amager and many other places.


At the present working on three different furniture projects for offices and private homes. They will be launched in 2011.


Launched the table concept «Airborne« for Eilersen in 2011.


Was included in Kraks BLÅ BOG 2012.


Won the design competition for Morsø Jernstøberi in 2011 with a modular wood stove with three windows.


Launch of wood stove 7900 for Morsø Jernstøberi in 2012 – sold in 25 markets worldwide.


Launch of the Outrup handle for Outrup Vinduer & Døre in 2012.


The bench series »Nyboder«, created for the historical area Nyboder in Copenhagen, was chosen by among others the municipality of Copenhagen, School of Visual Arts, Ministry of Defence, A.P. Møller foundation, and Danish Agency for Culture. Set up in Nyboder in October 2012.


»Lines forever« Damask woven bed linen with embroidered musical love notes 2012.


The chair concept ”Chairytale” was launched in October 2012 for Vermund Larsen www.vermund.eu, 2012. Can be bought in a range of leading designer furniture boutiques in Denmark – the so-called White Furniture Houses (Hvide Møbelhuse).


Launch of the anniversary wood stove "7400" on the occasion of Morsø Jernstøberi’s 160 year anniversary, 2013.

Has created paintings for the company Enemærke & Petersen’s annual employee prize in the years 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.


"Design Museum Denmark" has invited Monica Ritterband to exhibit in the large scale semi-permanent exhibition (runs for five years) with the title "Danish Design Now". Quote from the museum's press release and invitation: "Everything designed in the 21st century by leading and talented Danish designers." 2016


Has been accepted to the state-supported VAK, Vestsjællands Arbejdende Kunstværksteder
(active art workshops in West Zealand) on the basis of CV and merits. 2016
